France, Portugal and Spain are sending over 250 firefighters, coordinators and medical staff
More than 250 firefighters, coordinators and medical staff are being sent by France, Portugal and Spain, through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, following a request for help from Chile due to the devastating fires that have been raging in the country for days.
European civil protection assistance includes 141 firefighters, specialist coordinators and medical personnel from Portugal, 80 firefighters from France, as well as two ground-based forest firefighting teams consisting of a total of 28 people and a 10-member forest fire assessment and advisory team from Spain.
A liaison officer from the EU Emergency Coordination Center has been deployed to Chile and an EU civil protection team will travel there in the coming days.
The European Emergency Response Center has activated the data collection service Aristotle and the emergency satellite mapping service Copernicus, which has so far produced 15 maps.
Earlier this year, the EU provided the Chilean Red Cross with €100,000 in emergency aid to support people affected by the fires at the end of December in the upper part of the Valparaiso region, 120 km from Santiago.
