Omicron: First case in Uruguay

by

Uruguayan Health Minister Daniel Salinas announced on Wednesday the first case of the highly contagious Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in the Latin American country.

The researcher Gregorio Iraola of the Pasteur Institute in Montevideo “managed to confirm” that “the Omicron variant has entered our country”, Mr. Salinas stressed to journalists.

More details will be provided today, Thursday, by the Pasteur Institute and the Ministry of Health, he assured after an extraordinary meeting of the cabinet under the chairmanship of Luis Lacaye Po.

“We expect (s.s. that the virus will show) behavior similar to what we see around the world, ie a very sharp increase in cases”, despite the fact that 75% have now been fully vaccinated, added Mr. Salinas.

913 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed on Tuesday, the highest number since July 1. The so-called active cases increased from 4,230 to 4,820. This is the highest level they have reached since July 17th.

Officially, the Latin American country counts 6,167 deaths due to complications of COVID-19 out of a total of 408,894 SARS-CoV-2 cases, according to Health Ministry figures.
