The defense ministry spokesman tweeted that the Austrian Forces’ Disaster Management Unit will again be available for further rescue operations when the environment in which they operate becomes safe.
The Austrian military has suspended rescue operations in earthquake-hit Turkey due to the “increasingly dangerous security situation”, its spokesman said on Twitter today.
Defense Ministry spokesman Michael Bauer tweeted that the Austrian Armed Forces Disaster Management Unit (AFDRU) will again be available for further rescue operations when the environment in which they operate becomes safe.
French news agency AFP reported clashes between groups and said Austrian soldiers had taken refuge in a camp with other international organizations and were awaiting instructions.
Around 80 rescuers from the Austrian armed forces have been in Antakya (Antioch), Turkey since February 7 and have already freed 9 people from the wreckage.
