Police authorities estimate that around 960,000 French people took part in the demonstrations
The fourth round of protests against the reform of the pension system ended this afternoon in France, where unions organized demonstrations in over 200 cities, involving hundreds of thousands of workers. The police estimated that around 960,000 French people took part in the demonstrations, which were more or less peaceful, with the exception of some isolated incidents in Paris, Nantes and Rennes, while organizers estimated that the demonstrators exceeded 2.5 million.
The fifth round is already planned for next Thursday and will be accompanied by strike actions, while the sixth is planned for the beginning of March with union representatives, mainly from the left-wing unions, talking about rolling general strikes.
Until then, the consultation will continue at the parliamentary level, where both the government and the opposition believe that it is possible to form a majority, the former in favor of the reform, the latter against the reform.
In this case, everything depends on how the deputies of the Republicans, i.e. the center-right, will behave, who in the past have been in favor of reforming the country’s pension system, starting with the increase of the French retirement age from 62 years he is now 64 years old. At the moment, the parliamentary consultation is at the stage of the government’s proposed consolidation of several insurance funds, where both the extreme right and the left have clearly opposed it. The parliamentary process is estimated to be completed at the beginning of March.
