The news of the murder of the well-known rapper was announced by his family through social media
Popular South African rap star Kiernan Forbes, known by the stage name AKA, was shot dead outside a restaurant in the southeastern city of Durban, his family said.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the untimely and tragic death of our beloved son on the evening of February 10, 2023,” his parents wrote on the 35-year-old artist’s social media, adding that they were awaiting further details from Durban police.
A statement from KwaZulu-Natal police said two men aged 34 and 35 were fatally injured shortly after 10pm local time on Friday night.
The victims, who were not named in the filing, were apparently returning to their vehicle after leaving a restaurant “when they were approached by two gunmen who then shot them at close range.” “The suspects then fled on foot.”
Police spokesman Robert Netsiuda told a South African news agency that a “well-known rapper” had been killed, but he “cannot release any of the names of the victims” pending the investigation.
The other victim has not been officially named, but was identified in local media as a friend of the rapper.
The Music Rights Organization of South Africa paid tribute to the rapper, saying he had “contributed immensely to the country’s music industry”.
