Police in Raleigh, North Carolina have released video showing the violent arrest of an unarmed African-American man who died after officers repeatedly tasered him.

In edited video released Friday by Raleigh police, Darryl Tyree Williams can be heard yelling to officers who are trying to handcuff him that he has heart problems.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Jan. 17 when officers conducted what Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson described as a “precautionary patrol” in a company parking lot in the southeast part of the North Carolina capital.

Six police officers have been suspended pending an investigation into the incident, according to a report published in January.

Last week, a Wake County judge authorized the release of the video, which includes images from body cameras, body cameras and surveillance cameras in neighboring buildings.

One of the cameras worn by the officers shows them approaching the parked car of Williams, who was in the driver’s seat.

Police saw alcohol in an open bottle and marijuana inside the vehicle, according to the report. One of the officers decided to arrest Williams when he spotted a folded bill in his pocket which appeared to contain “a white powder”.

In the video, Williams and the other occupant of the vehicle, who has not been identified, can be heard asking the officers why they are being questioned and why they are searching the car. When the officers tried to arrest him, Williams resisted and a struggle ensued.

One of the officers can be heard threatening to taser Williams if he doesn’t stop resisting. He then does so and Williams falls to the ground, next to a parked car. A little later he tries to escape.

The roughly 13-minute video shows multiple officers rushing to the scene and attempting to arrest Williams, who is eventually pinned to the ground.

“Put your hands behind your back, I’m going to taser you,” an officer can be heard saying. The officers continued to taser Williams, even after he informed them that he was suffering from heart problems.

As he is being handcuffed, Williams appears to be having difficulty breathing and his condition appears to be rapidly deteriorating. The police check his pulse and call an ambulance.

According to the preliminary investigation, officers began performing CPR on Williams when they realized he was unconscious.

An ambulance took Williams to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:01 a.m., just over an hour after officers approached his vehicle.

Two guns, marijuana and “suspected controlled substances” were found in the car.

Williams’ mother confirmed that he was suffering from heart problems. His family has seen the video, but has yet to comment.
