Taliban block access to US-funded news sites

The Afghanistan Journalists’ Center (AFJC) stressed in a statement that the Taliban must respect the rights of the media and journalists.

An Afghan journalists’ organization criticized the Taliban’s de facto government for recently blocking access to the US government-funded news websites Radio Azadi and Voice of America, citing a violation of media laws.

The Afghanistan Journalists’ Center (AFJC) stressed in a statement that the Taliban must respect the rights of the media and journalists.

He recalled that two months ago, the Taliban had closed the FM frequencies of the two radio stations. Now, the stations’ websites “have also been blocked or restricted access to them” in Afghanistan, he added.

VOA and Radio Azadi have been producing content in Afghan languages for two decades. The two organizations confirmed that their websites were blocked for internet users in Afghanistan.

The de facto Taliban government has repeatedly accused the two media outlets of bias against them and breaching journalistic ethics.

According to the AFJC, more than half of the approximately 600 media outlets that were active in Afghanistan before the Taliban regained power in August 2021 have closed, either for financial reasons or due to restrictions imposed on them by the new regime.

Hundreds of journalists and media workers left the country during the same period.
