Austria: Former Chancellor Kurtz hired after corruption scandal

by

Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, who resigned following his involvement in a corruption scandal, will start working next year at Thiel Capital – a California-based investment company – as Austrian media reported today.

According to a report in the newspaper Kronen Zeitung and the news website Heute, Kurtz himself confirmed to them that he would work as a global strategist at the company, which was founded by billionaire venture capitalist Peter Tielen on the 20th.

A spokesman for Kurtz, who has been chancellor since then, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Kurz, 35, resigned as chancellor of Austria in early October following persistent allegations of corruption, and resigned in early December as chairman of the conservative Austrian People’s Party.

The scandal erupted when investigations into the chancellery and the finance ministry over a case of misuse of public money by Kurtz’s associates.

The aim was to fund rigged polls and to make Kurtz have a positive media profile of the powerful Austrian Österreich group.

He denies all the accusations.

Heute, citing sources close to Kurtz, said the former chancellor would travel between Europe, where his family will be staying, and the United States, where the company is based.

Born in Frankfurt, Tiel is one of the founders of the American multinational PayPal and is considered a political conservative.
