Airspace over Lake Michigan in the northern United States, temporarily closed for “national defense” reasons earlier today, has reopened, the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced tonight.
“The FAA briefly closed a portion of the airspace over Lake Michigan to support Department of Defense operations. The airspace has reopened,” the statement said.
When contacted by AFP, the Pentagon had no comment.
The news comes as three flying objects, one of which Washington says is a Chinese spy balloon, have been shot down over the US and Canada within a week.
On Saturday, the airspace of the US state of Montana was temporarily closed, but a fighter jet that took off urgently to investigate a “radar anomaly” did not detect a flying “object”, according to the military.
The United States believes the first object officially spotted was a balloon controlled by the Chinese military and part of a fleet sent by Beijing to more than 40 countries on five continents for spying purposes.
