Israel launched airstrikes overnight Sunday into Monday against an underground military facility of the Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip, in retaliation for rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, the Israeli military said.

“In response to the launch of a rocket from the Gaza Strip into Israel on Saturday, the Chahal (Israeli army) struck at night an underground complex containing raw materials for the manufacture of rockets, belonging to the terrorist organization Hamas” , the general staff said via Twitter.

A Reuters journalist reported hearing several explosions in the early hours of the morning.

There are no reports of casualties at this stage.

The Palestinian group known as the Lion’s Den, whose members are mainly based in Nablus and nearby Jenin, has been the target of repeated Israeli special forces operations. The group said it ambushed an Israeli army unit. There has been no comment on this from the Israeli side.
