Italy-Covid-19: 320,000 people infected in Italy last week – Less than 2% admitted to hospital

by

According to the Gimbe Scientific Foundation, 320,000 people were infected with coronavirus in Italy last week. The increase, compared to the week from December 15 to 21, reaches 80.6%.

Deaths increased by 16.1%, admissions to intensive care units increased by 13.1% and hospital wards by 20%.

“Incidents are on the rise due to the increased circulation of the virus, but also the proliferation of diagnostic tests,” said Gimbe Foundation President Nino Kartabelota.

At this stage, the virus positives, across the country, are 598,000. Last week they did not exceed 212,000.

The hopeful message, however, is that less than 2% of people infected with the virus are transported to the hospital. This is explained by the success of the vaccination campaign but also by the fact that children, who have been significantly affected by the Omicron variant, usually have milder symptoms.

Finally, in terms of the country’s major cities, the one with the most incidents in the last seven days is Milan. They are followed by Perugia, Siena, Florence and Venice.
