Europe stands by the people of Turkey and Syria, the president of the European Parliament said, adding that the EU’s civil protection mechanism has been activated and aid is being sent.
H President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola called on MEPs to observe a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syriaat the start of the plenary session at Strasbourg.
Europe stands by the people of Turkey and Syria, Ms Metsola said, adding that the EU’s civil protection mechanism has been activated and aid is being sent. “Our thoughts are with the families of those who were killed, trapped, injured, as well as with all the rescuers who are fighting day and night to save lives,” he stressed.
Referring to the extraordinary plenary session on February 9, when Ukrainian President Zelensky addressed the European Parliament, the EP President noted that his words reminded MEPs that the war in Ukraine is not just a battle for territory, but also for defense of common values. The European Parliament continues to express its full solidarity with Ukraine and its people, he concluded.
