U-Haul rental truck driver plowed into bicyclists and pedestrians as he tried to elude police in Brooklyn, New Yorkbefore security forces finally stopped the vehicle and arrested him.

A police spokesman said that at least eight people were injured, stressing that there were no indications that this was a terrorist act.

The injured included three motorcyclists and a pedestrian in his 30s, NBC News reported, citing police sources. Two of the injured are hospitalized in a serious condition, he says.

Shortly after the driver’s arrest, city councilor Justin Brannan said the assailant “knew what he was doing, he knew he hit people.” Speaking to a NY1 reporter, he reported that the truck driver said “I want to die” to the officers who arrested him.

In a video documentary broadcast by WABC-TV, part of the pursuit of the pickup truck by a police patrol car can be seen. A pedestrian escapes at the last moment before being swept away by the speeding vehicle.

The episode unfolded hours before a federal court verdict on whether to impose the death penalty on Uzbek extremist Seyfulo Saipov, who was found guilty of the terrorist attack on a Manhattan bike path. On October 31, 2017, he had driven his truck onto a bicycle path, killing eight people and injuring more than ten.
