Ms Burbock will be in Stockholm today as defense ministers, officers and others meet in Brussels as part of the so-called Ramstein scheme, which handles Ukraine’s military support for the war with Russia.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said on Monday that her government is not discussing the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine.
“We are not having a dialogue on this issue,” she said in Helsinki after meeting her Finnish counterpart.
Ms Burbock will be in Stockholm today as defense ministers, officers and others meet in Brussels as part of the so-called Ramstein scheme, which handles Ukraine’s military support for the war with Russia. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov is expected to be present.
Commitments and announcements about upcoming arms deliveries to Kiev are usually made at these meetings.
Germany is currently trying to coordinate deliveries of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. It will supply the Ukrainian army with 14 such heavy tanks.
Finland’s foreign minister, Pekka Haavisto, said after meeting Ms Burbok that his government had not yet decided whether to join the venture.
The German foreign minister insisted that it is important that the deliveries are made jointly, by an alliance of states. “We express our gratitude to the other countries that take this decision,” he added.
Although Ms. Burbock said Berlin was not discussing the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine, which Kiev is pushing for, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he was open to the idea and that the matter could be discussed today.
After today’s meeting, a meeting of the defense ministers of the NATO member states will be held in Brussels.
