17-year-old Duangpets Probtep was rescued in 2018 in an unprecedented rescue operation, but the boy died last Sunday in Britain
17-year-old Duangpets Probthep, known as ‘Dom’, one of 12 boys trapped and rescued from a Thai cave in 2018, has died in the UK.
Duangpets was found unconscious in his dormitory in Leicestershire on Sunday and taken to hospital, where he died on Tuesday, according to the BBC, but the cause of his death has not yet been released. The 17-year-old had been enrolled in a football academy in the UK since late last year. In particular, last August, his team-mates were delighted when ‘Dom’ announced on Instagram that he had won a scholarship to join the Brooke House College Football Academy in Market Harborough.
“Today my dream came true,” he wrote. Just six months later, they are mourning the loss of their friend.
Leicestershire Police said his death is not being treated as suspicious. Reports from Thailand say he suffered a head injury.
In 2018, when he was trapped with 11 other people under a cave for more than two weeks in Chiang Rai province, the 17-year-old was the leader of the “Wild Boars”. The boys, aged 11-16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach set out to explore the Tam Luang cave complex for just an hour, but ended up trapped when a landslide hit and flooded the chamber they were in. They were located nine days later 4 kilometers (2.5 mi) from the entrance to the caves. Their complicated rescue began six days later in an unprecedented operation in which a former diver died.
