A major police and army battle against the Taliban is underway in Karachi after a group of armed Islamists earlier stormed a police building in the city centre.

Eyewitnesses stressed that they heard a powerful explosion from inside the premises.

Footage broadcast by local TV network Geo News shows dozens of police and paramilitaries cordoning off the compound, which houses several security offices, including the city’s police headquarters.

The area has been plunged into darkness, snipers are positioned around the high-rise building while dozens of people – police and civilians – are trapped inside.

There are constant explosions and gunshots while there are several casualties.

Reuters reports 2 dead police officers but local media reports more than 20.
