Harvard professor found guilty of ‘working for China’

by

A Harvard chemistry professor was found guilty by a Boston court on Tuesday of charges related to his business relationship with a Chinese university. The allegations included false statements to officials and tax returns and non-reporting of his Chinese bank account.

The case was part of a federal program to tackle Chinese influence in US research. Professor Charles Liber is a renowned nanoscientist and former chairman of Harvard Chemistry.

Prosecutors say Liber agreed in 2011 to work with Wuhan University of Technology in China. According to reports, the court accused him of helping other scientists participate in a specialized program in China.

Prosecutors say China is using the program to persuade foreign researchers to share their knowledge with the country. Participation in the program is not a crime. However, prosecutors said Liber, 62, had lied to officials about his involvement.

Liber’s lawyer had argued that prosecutors did not have enough evidence to prove his guilt. The professor, who is battling cancer, sat unperturbed as the court announced the verdict.
