Russia’s ambassador to the US has accused Washington of trying to justify its own actions to fuel the crisis in Ukraine with allegations of Russian crimes against humanity, Russia’s TASS news agency reported today.

“We consider insinuations of this kind an unprecedented attempt to demonize Russia in the context of the hybrid war they have launched against us,” Russian ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said, according to the Russian news agency.

“There is no doubt that the purpose of such attacks by Washington is to justify its own actions to fuel the Ukrainian crisis,” he noted, according to his statements cited by TASS.

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday for the first time accused Russia of committing “crimes against humanity” since it began its invasion of Ukraine nearly a year ago, warning that those responsible will be “held accountable” for their actions.

In her speech to the Munich Security Conference, Harris made a chilling enumeration of the atrocities attributed to Moscow, citing the systematic bombing of civilians and critical infrastructure, the torture and rape attributed to Russian soldiers, the deportation of Ukrainians to Russia, including thousands of children who were separated from their families.

“We’ve looked at the evidence, we know the legal standards, and there’s no question: these are crimes against humanity,” the US vice president noted.
