The new package of European Union sanctions against Russia is expected to take shape – in view of the completion of one year since the invasion of the Russian armed forces into the territory of Ukraine – at today’s council of foreign ministers.

The European Commission has proposed the 10th round of sanctions to include curbs on Russian exports and cracking down on attempts to evade existing sanctions.

However, a final decision is not expected today.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will join the council, which will deal with efforts to support the Ukrainian armed forces with further supplies of arms and ammunition.

THE Estonia wants to expand the European scheme for the delivery of arms and ammunition to Ukraine, to include joint purchases of ammunition and replenishment of stocks of EU member states.

It is expected that the council will also participate Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Nikos Popescu, after the recent fall of that country’s government amid allegations of Russian meddling, denied by the Kremlin.

Further, new sanctions against individuals and legal entities in Iran are expected to be agreed due to the ongoing crackdown on anti-government protests.

Ways to provide aid to Afghanistan are also expected to be explored after the de facto Taliban government banned women from working in NGOs.

Furthermore, the agenda includes the EU’s priorities in view of COP28, the upcoming UN conference on preventing climate change.
