One bus carrying immigrants from Venezuela, Colombia and from Central American countriesoverturned in central Mexico, killing 17 peopleofficials in the State of Puebla said today.

The accident occurred on a highway yesterday afternoon, as well a bus with 45 passengers was heading north, state Interior Secretary Julio Huerta told reporters.

“Fifteen people died instantly at the time of the traffic accident,” he told a press conference. Another 15 were hospitalized, two of whom later died, he said. Five others remain in critical condition.

The official did not elaborate how many of the dead and wounded they were immigrants and Mexico’s immigration agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Immigrants often follow dangerous routes to pass through Mexico on their way to the US border.

Mexican media reported that the bus overturned when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Last week, dozens of migrants were killed in Panama when the bus they were traveling in crashed into a cliff, in the worst migrant accident in the country’s history.
