THE Parliament of Hungary may ratify the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO at the beginning of next month, Hungarian media reports today, citing the preliminary schedule of the body’s meetings for next week.

Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and they say they want to go hand in hand. Although most member countries of the Pact have already given their approval, Turkey and Hungary have not yet ratified this process. Last week Germany’s foreign minister asked the two countries to pave the way for Finland and Sweden to join “without further delay”.

The news website HVG.hu reported that Hungarian MPs may start the debate on March 1, and the ratification vote could take place as soon as next week.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said in November that his government had already decided to support the two countries’ request. The government submitted the relevant bill in July, but the Parliament, where Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party has a large majority, has not yet brought it up for discussion and approval.

Orban said on Saturday that it was “vital” for Hungary to remain a member of NATO, but his government would not send weapons to Ukraine or sever its economic ties with Moscow.
