Dozens of people have lost their lives in recent days from landslides caused by torrential rains in Sao Paulo, Brazil, while in neighboring Rio de Janeiro, carnival fiestas continue with undiminished merriment.

At least 45 people have been pulled dead from under tons of mud and 38 more are missing as rescue teams continue to search the affected areas.

In the state of Sao Paulo, a state of emergency was declared in five coastal cities where landslides cut off major roads, making access difficult.

About 2,500 people have been forced to leave their homes and many of them have been left homeless, the government statement said.

The city of Sao Sebastiao has the highest number of victims (43), according to the latest count.

Brazil

The heavy rains came at a time when Brazil’s beaches are flooded with tourists who want to enjoy the carnival events – which, despite the tragedy – have not been cancelled.

The floods and landslides in Sao Paulo state were the latest in a series of natural disasters to hit Brazil recently, where haphazard construction and poor workmanship often have tragic consequences during the rainy season.
