Today, the Commission approved a genetically modified canola and renewed the approval of a genetically modified soybean for use as food and feed. The Commission’s approval only concerns their use as food and animal feed and does not allow their cultivation in the EU. These genetically modified crops have undergone a comprehensive and rigorous control process that ensures a high level of protection of human and animal health, as and the environment.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a positive scientific assessment concluding that these genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are as safe as their conventional counterparts. Member States did not reach a qualified majority for or against approval in the framework of the standing committee and the second-stage appeals committee. Approvals are valid for 10 years and any product produced from these GMOs will be subject to strict EU labeling and traceability rules.
