Russia’s ambassador to the UN said that “the US and its allies are ready to plunge the whole world into war”
The head of the UN Antonio Guterres condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine as an “insult” to the global collective conscience at a General Assembly meeting nearly a year later.
The UN meeting discussed a proposal supported by Ukraine and allies demanding that Russia withdraw immediately and unconditionally. Kiev hopes that by supporting the move countries will show solidarity.
The Kremlin has accused the West of “wanting to defeat Russia at any cost”. Vasily Nebenzia, the Kremlin’s ambassador to the UN, said that “the US and its allies are ready to sink the whole world at war.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin sent some 200,000 troops into Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in the largest European invasion since the end of World War II. The devastating war that followed has left at least 7,199 civilians dead and thousands more injured, according to a UN estimate, but the number is likely to be much higher.
