Britons struggling to find tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers as the country faces shortages that could last another month can try buying turnips instead, the country’s food minister urged today.

yesterday wednesday Britain’s largest supermarket group Tesco followed rivals Asda, Morrisons and Aldi in imposing limits on vegetables that consumers can buy, due to the lack of vegetables in the country.

Shortages have worsened as high energy costs have led to lower production in greenhouses in Britain and the Netherlands combined with harvest problems in southern Europe and northern Africa

THE Terry CoffeySecretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, stressed that Britons could do with more seasonal vegetables, although he knows that consumers are used to supermarkets ensuring availability of almost all produce all year round.

“It’s important to make sure we cherish the particularities we have in this country,” he told parliament.

Many people would be eating turnips right now, rather than necessarily thinking about… lettuce and tomatoesshe said, referring to the root and tuber vegetable traditionally available in Britain at this time of year.

He added that the shortages could last up to a month.

I have been led to the conclusion, by my officials after discussion with the retailers in the industry… that the situation will last approximately another two to four weeks. It is important to try and make sure we have alternative supply options“, he emphasized.
