In one year of the war in Ukraine they were killed at least 15,136 Russian military personnel, according to the data collected from open sources by the journalists of the website Mediazona and the Russian service of the BBC.

Among the 15,136 Russian soldiers, 1,214 are in the military. The journalists of the two media identified the names 588 members of the mercenary organization Wagner who were killed and 1,310 former prisoners.

From February 24 to the war in Ukraine more than 1,800 officers were killedof which 199 with the title of lieutenant colonel and above.

As the Mediazona site points out, the number of casualties in the ranks of the Russian army exceeds the official number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan. According to official figures, in the nine years of the war in Afghanistan, from December 25, 1979 to February 15, 1989, the Soviet Union lost 15,051 soldiers in Afghanistan.

The Russian Ministry of Defense last reported on the losses of the Russian army in Ukraine in September of last year. “Our losses to date are 5,937 casualties,” Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said at the time.

Journalists of the Nediazona website and the BBC Russian service in cooperation with a group of volunteers are gathering information about the death of Russian soldiers from the posts of their relatives, from the news in the local media and the official announcements of the regional authorities. The actual number of casualties may be higher.
