European justice has announced the seizure of more than 170,000 euros in assets belonging to Italian League MEP Stefania Zampelli and four of her assistants, as part of a fraud investigation.

The four assistants “did not carry out the activities related to the function for which they were hired, or only partially, and misleadingly documented their activities to the European Parliament”, according to a statement from the European Prosecutor General’s Office (BPGE).

The Italian MEP’s assistants also cheated on their qualifications “by declaring diplomas and professional skills they do not possess”, BPGE reports.

As for the far-right MEP, who is a close relative of at least one of the accused aides, she is suspected of personally benefiting from her aides’ income.

The seizure of €170,000 (bank accounts, luxury cars) carried out on 23 February by the Italian financial police corresponds to the damage as assessed by the investigation.

Stefania Zampelli did not respond to AFP’s request to comment on the case.
