“I recognize that it may take some time to work out the details of the deal, but I would urge political leaders in Northern Ireland to act quickly,” said Michal Martin.
Ireland’s foreign secretary has welcomed Britain and the European Union’s agreement on post-Brexit amended arrangements for Northern Ireland and urged the region’s parties to act quickly to form a local government and end the political deadlock in Northern Ireland
“I have heard first-hand the concerns of many supporters of a political union between Britain and Northern Ireland. I believe they will see this as a genuine response to their genuine concerns,” Michal Martin, who was Ireland’s prime minister during most of the negotiations, said in a statement.
“I recognize that it may take some time to work out the details of the deal, but I would urge political leaders in Northern Ireland to act quickly, to put in place institutions that can respond immediately to the needs of the people of Northern Ireland,” he added.
The agreement reached aims to resolve tensions caused in 2020 by the Brexit arrangements concerning Northern Ireland and keeping its border open with the Republic of Ireland, a member of the European Union.
