Russian government officials will henceforth be banned from using most foreign words in the performance of their duties, under amendments to a law on the official use of the Russian language signed by President Vladimir Putin today.

The amendments to a 2005 law aim to protect and support the status of the Russian language, according to the text posted on the government’s website.

When using Russian, as the official language of the Russian Federation, it is not allowed to use words and expressions that do not correspond to the rules of the modern Russian language (…) with the exception of foreign words for which there is no widely used equivalent in Russian» says this text.

The list of foreign words that can still be used will be published separately. The amendments do not state what penalties anyone who fails to comply with the updated law will face.
