Russia announced today that he will agree to extend the Black Sea agreement for grainswhich allows the safe export of grain from Ukrainian ports, only if the interests of its own agricultural producers are taken into account.

The Black Sea Grains Agreement, brokered last year by the United Nations and Turkey, expires on March 18 and can be extended if all parties agree. Russia has already said it is unhappy with some aspects of the deal.

Russian agricultural exports have not been targeted in detail by Western sanctions, but Moscow says sanctions on its payment system, supply chain and insurance industry are an “obstacle” to being able to export its own grain and fertilizer .

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the prospects of renewing the agreement during his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in New Delhi.

“The Russian side emphasized that it is possible to continue the grain package agreement only if the interests of Russian grain and fertilizer producers have unhindered access to world markets and are taken into account”it is stated in the announcement of the ministry.
