The new accident with dead migrants in Calabria has reignited the debate on increasing migration flows. Why don’t they prefer the Turkey-Greece route?
There are sixty-five immigrants and refugees who were recovered dead from the sea area near the coast of Crotona, in Calabria. From the shipwreck that occurred last Sunday, eighty-five people were saved, but there are more than fifty missing.
The coffins were taken to the Palais de Sport in Croton. The surviving relatives today said a “sorrowful farewell” to their bereaved people.
In Italy, everyone is still trying to understand how it could have happened. According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, it seems that something did not work as it should in the aid phase. It is possible that the Italian authorities did not realize in time the danger faced by the more than two hundred people on board the boat that had started its journey from Smyrna. Frontex notified the Italian authorities, but wrote in a message that the vessel was traveling under normal conditions. For this reason, no Italian coast guard vessels were mobilized, but the smallest speedboats of the economic police, which have limited possibilities to participate in rescue operations.
Very dangerous journeys
Aside from any mistakes, there is another issue. In Italy, the authorities as well as the commentators are wondering why, in recent months, the arrivals of immigrants and refugees from Turkey show a continuous increase. One explanation, given by public broadcaster Rai, is that flows to the Greek islands have been restricted due to greater security and, consequently, the alternative chosen by traffickers is the coasts of Calabria and Apulia. These are high-risk journeys that last four to five days. After Libya, the government of Georgia Meloni is also faced with a new problem.
Meanwhile, the government in Rome insists that the only solution is legal immigration, and has announced that this year it intends to allow around 500,000 economic migrants to come to Italy legally.
Finally, the NGOs are asking to be allowed to increase rescue operations in the Mediterranean (by repealing the new, strict regulation approved by Italy) so that no more tragedies occur. “We have to remind some, that non-governmental organizations, anyway, are not present with their boats on the sea route from Turkey to Italy,” replied members of the Meloni government.
