The images of the period 1901 – 1936 have been recorded mainly by the Australian pioneer Captain John King Davies
Hundreds of rare photographs from early 20th century British and Australian Antarctic expeditions digitized and released by the National Archives of Australia
The photographs reveal the harsh landscapes of the frozen continent and the people who explored it as well as the difficult conditions the explorers faced.
The images from the period 1901-1936 have been captured mainly by English-born Australian pioneer Captain John King Davies and feature Antarctic explorers Joseph Kinsey, Ernest Shackleton, Douglas Mawson and Frank Stillwell, according to news network 9news.
Davies, who was Director of Navigation for the Commonwealth of Australia, made five voyages to the frozen continent and became captain of the Aurora during the Australian Antarctic Expedition between 1911 and 1914, after befriending the Australian geologist Mawson.
Some photos are of Frank Harley photographer and explorer. Harley was the official photographer of four Antarctic expeditions led by Shackleton and Mawson.
In one of the expeditions the ship “Endurance” collided with an iceberg and its members remained for 11 months on the island of Elephanta.
“There are wonderful images of unique wildlife, as well as photographs depicting the science and technology of the time,” said Archives Australia director-general Simon Freud.
