Netherlands: Arrests and Police Injuries on Demonstration Against Docunt

by

Members of the Dutch police riot police with grenades and shields dispersed a crowd of thousands of people who had gathered today in Amsterdam to protest against the crackdown on Covid-19 and the vaccination.

Public gatherings of more than two people are banned due to restrictions imposed by the government in an effort to prevent the Omicron variant of the coronavirus from flooding the already strained health system in the Netherlands.

At least 30 people were arrested after the incidents, during which four police officers were injured, police said in a statement.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema issued an emergency decree ordering police to restore order in the Museum’s main square after protesters disobeyed a ban on public gatherings.

The demonstrators, most of whom did not wear masks and did not observe social distancing measures, ignored the order not to march and moved along a main street, playing music and holding yellow umbrellas, expressing their opposition to the government measures. .
