Former Pakistan women’s hockey team player Shahida Raza is among at least 67 dead of the wreck of the wooden boat, which carried immigrants and which crashed on the rocks on Italy’s southern coast in the early hours of Sunday, according to officials in her home province.

The boat, which authorities believe was carrying up to 200 migrants, had sailed from Turkey and capsized in rough seas before dawn on Sunday near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on Calabria’s eastern coast.

Among the dead in the shipwreck are 16 children.

Those on board were mostly from Afghanistan, but also from Pakistan, Syria, the Palestinian Territories, Iran and Somalia, according to Italian authorities.

“Pakistani authorities have informed Raza’s family that the Pakistan national hockey team player has gone missing in the maritime accident off the coast of Italy,” Qadir Ali Nagel, a lawmaker for Balochistan province, told Reuters late Wednesday night.

Raza was 27 years old and originally from this province in southwestern Pakistan. He also played football in indoor competitions.

The head of his government Balochistan expressed grief over her death, saying in a statement that Raza had brought honor to the province and the country.
