The general secretary of United Nations Antonio Guterres announced today that Cindy McCain, the widow of Republican senator and US presidential candidate John McCain, will take over as head of the World Food Program (WFP).

Cindy McCain is currently the US ambassador to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. He will replace David Beasley, the Republican former governor of South Carolina, who is leaving the WFP after six years as its head.

McCain’s appointment was jointly decided by Guterres and the head of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Gu Dongyu, a former Chinese vice minister of agriculture and rural affairs.

McCain had endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election against Republican Donald Trump. The head of the WFP is traditionally American and Biden nominated her for the position. The US is by far WFP’s largest donor, contributing more than $7 billion to the UN agency in 2022.
