The fire was caused by the ignition of a battery charging a device which was inside a piece of luggage
A Spirit Airlines flight en route from Dallas to Orlando, USA, made an emergency landing in Jacksonville, Florida when a battery caught fire last Wednesday.
According to nbcnews, a battery that was charging a device that was inside a piece of luggage that was in the lockers located directly above the seats ignited, causing smoke to start coming out. The crew, with the help of passengers, including a pensioner firefighter, managed to extinguish the fire.

“I guess it’s just instinct. It was an overhead suitcase and smoke was coming out of it,” said retired firefighter Rocco Chirerichella who helped put out the blaze.
“The pilot landed us quickly. We had a really smooth landing, but it was pretty scary for a while until we knew we were on the ground and safe,” added Kerri Arakawa.
At least 10 passengers were injured and taken to hospitals.
