The United Nations made this appeal to the international community to ease the pressure on local Turkish communities devastated by the earthquake.
The UN today urged the international community to speed up the resettlement, to other host countries, of Syrian refugees living in the earthquake-hit areas of Turkey.
The United Nations made this appeal on the occasion of the arrival in Madrid of 89 Syrian refugees from Turkey. Over the past 12 years, Turkey has hosted around 3.5 million refugees who fled their country to escape the war.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria and destroyed thousands of homes. It is estimated that of the approximately 9 million earthquake victims, 1.7 million are refugees.
“Many refugees who fled to Turkey in search of safety and protection have now (…) lost their homes and their means of survival,” the International Organization for Migration and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said in a joint statement.
To protect the most vulnerable refugees and ease the pressure on local communities devastated by the earthquake, the UN is calling on other countries to speed up the process of relocating Syrians to other areas, UNHCR chief Filippo Grandi said. .
