Concerned parents protested today in Tehran and other cities, on the occasion of the suspected poisoning of schoolgirls in dozens of schools in Iran.

In recent months, hundreds of girls have mysteriously fallen ill. Iranian officials believe that the schoolgirls were poisoned and blame it on “enemies” of the regime. Some politicians say the schoolgirls may have been targeted by hard-line Islamist groups opposed to women’s education.

Cases of poisoning have recently been recorded in more than 30 schools, in at least 10 of Iran’s 31 provinces. Videos posted on social media showed parents rushing to the school to pick up their children and some female students being taken to hospitals in ambulances or buses.

A gathering of parents outside the Ministry of Education in Tehran today turned into an anti-government demonstration, according to a video, the authenticity of which has been verified by Reuters. “Basiji, Guards, you are our Daesh,” chanted the crowd, equating the Revolutionary Guards and other security forces with Islamic State jihadists.

Similar demonstrations took place in two other areas of Tehran and in cities such as Isfahan and Rasht, according to unverified videos.
