At least 45,968 people were killed in Turkey by the earthquakes that hit the country’s southeastern provinces last month, according to the latest official tally released on Saturday by the country’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu. Among them – as he clarified – are 4,267 Syrians.

Since February 6, when two strong earthquakes (magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6) shook southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria, 13,722 aftershocks have been recorded, the Turkish minister said during a visit to Hatay province, where 6,832 buildings have been damaged. was deemed to be demolished and another 19,042 have suffered significant damage.

Over 1.5 million earthquake victims are living in tents, while thousands of containers are also arriving in the affected areas. Nearly 1.6 million families have received an allowance of 10,000 Turkish lira (US$498), Soylu said.

The death toll so far in Turkey and Syria is estimated at 54,444, since the latest information from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicates a total of 8,476 dead in the areas under the control of Damascus and those controlled by anti-regime rebels.
