During his live-streamed chat with a Hungarian-Canadian trauma doctor, Prince Harry said that having grown up in a “broken family,” he does his best not to transmit (mentally) ” injuries’ to his children.
Prince Harry revealed on Saturday that he has always felt “a bit different” from the rest of Britain’s royal family and that using cannabis has helped him, during a lengthy discussion with a Hungarian-Canadian trauma doctor and author.
Harry, 38, told Dr Gabor Mate that, having grown up in a “broken family”, he does his best not to pass on (mental) “trauma” to his children.
The discussion with Dr Mate followed the release of his controversial autobiography Reserve in which Prince Harry recounts his teenage years, marked by drug and alcohol problems, and details the breakdown of his relationship with his father ( King Charles III) and his brother (Prince William).
“All my life, from a young age, I’ve felt slightly different from the rest of my family,” Harry told Dr Mate, in an interview broadcast live online. “I felt strange in that environment and I know my mother felt the same,” he said, referring to the late Princess Diana.
He claimed he was “saved” by his wife Megan, “an extraordinary person” who “coming from a different world”, helped him.
During the debate, Gabor Mate – author of several books on trauma, addiction and illness – diagnosed Prince Harry with attention deficit disorder. Summarizing his life so far, Dr Mate highlighted that Harry – who lost his mother at the age of 12 and later served in the British armed forces in Afghanistan – suffers from “a lot of psychological trauma”.
Now based in California after stepping down from the royal family in early 2020, Prince Harry opened up about raising the two children he has with Meghan, three-year-old Archie and one-year-old Lilybet. “I feel like I have a huge responsibility, not to pass on to them any trauma or negative experiences I’ve had,” he said.
In his autobiography, Prince Harry admits that in his teens he regularly used cannabis and tried cocaine. He told Dr. Mate that cocaine “didn’t do anything to me,” but marijuana was “different.” “It really helped me,” she claimed.
Buckingham Palace has not revealed whether Harry and Meghan will attend the coronation of King Charles III in May.
