The Russian military says it hit an Azov Battalion position in Zaporizhia province
A woman and two children were killed by Russian mortar shelling of a village in the southern Ukrainian province of Kherson, the head of the Ukrainian presidency’s office said today.
“Mortar shelling of the village of Poniatifka in Kherson province. A private house was hit,” Andriy Germak wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
“Russian terrorists are still killing civilians,” it said, without giving further details about the attack.
Kherson was occupied by Russian troops during the first days of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine until it was recaptured by Kiev forces in November.
Since it was liberated, the city has been regularly shelled from Russian positions across the Dnieper River.
For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that the Russian military today struck a command center of the Azov Battalion of the Ukrainian forces in the southeastern Zaporizhia province.
The ministry did not say more about the attack in its daily bulletin on what Moscow calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Reuters cannot independently confirm the report.
The Azov Order, which has far-right and ultra-nationalist roots and is now a unit of the Ukrainian national guard, gained international attention for its resistance to the Russian siege of the huge Mariupol steelworks last year.
The Russian Defense Ministry did not mention in its bulletin today the battle around the eastern city of Bakhmut, which Russian forces are trying to capture.
