The warning covers central and south-east England, including London, as well as Wales, while an earlier warning was issued for Scotland, Northern Ireland and north-east England, where the effects are expected to be more severe.

In some parts of Scotland the snow is estimated to can reach 30 cm, while in the rest of the country two centimeters.

Temperatures in northern Scotland could drop below -10C, while in England the mercury will be around zero.

The worsening weather is due to an arctic air mass moving south.

Regarding temperatures, the UK Health Protection Agency has issued level 3 alarm for the north of England and level 2 for the rest of England.

At level 3 there is a 90% chance of extremely cold weather, with ice or snow, which can endanger the health of the most vulnerable citizens.

A cold weather warning is in effect for all areas until midnight Thursday.

Warnings for problems and delays have also been issued for travel on the country’s road and rail network.
