Italy: For compulsory vaccination of all public and private sector workers

by

Mario Draghi’s government is not backing down. According to all Italian media, in the next 48 hours it will be decided the mandatory use of the “super green vaccinated pass” for all public and private sector employees. A decisive step to force a large part of the 5.5 million Italians who have not yet done so, to come to the vaccination centers.

Until now, the League has raised the issue of protecting citizens who, for various health reasons, cannot get the vaccine. The Italian technocratic prime minister himself, however, assured the parties in the government that these individuals are already being provided with all the necessary protection. At the same time, the center-left strongly demands that the compulsory vaccination of all citizens over 18 years of age be decided. The issue will be discussed in the cabinet, but it is not certain that the necessary “green light” will be provided.

“Omicron” is pushing for immediate decisions

It is clear, however, that the Omicron mutation hastens the making of every necessary decision. “There is a real problem. “From the public transport sector to the garbage collection, the growing absenteeism of the coronavirus is causing a crisis in the Italian public sector,” writes today the Rome newspaper La Repubblica.

More than one million people at this stage are infected with the virus. 22% are 30 to 59 years old, ie at the most productive age. It is therefore impossible to find replacements for all of them in record time. And it is not ruled out that in the coming weeks, the number of positives will exceed two million.

In the meantime, new measures are expected for schools as well. Every effort will be made to be able to reopen normally after the Epiphany. However, the Ministry of Education wants to change the current rules: In the event that at least two positive cases occur in a classroom, the goal – from now on – is to put only unvaccinated children in distance education.
