Only one in three trains went on strike in Belgium today, according to rail operator SNCB/NMBS, as public sector workers walked off duty to protest staff shortages, reduced budgets and workloads.

The strike it also affects regional public transport and, as reported by local media, may also affect the opening hours of some public services such as town halls and recycling parks.

International rail connections have also experienced problems, with Belgian railway company SNCB/NMBS announcing that 12 services between Amsterdam and Brussels had been canceled and a spokesman for Franco-Belgian high-speed train operator Thalys saying that only two of the three trains in question were running today.

However, Eurostar–the high-speed rail service that connects the London with Paris and Brusselss–announced that it does not expect its routes to be affected.

Today’s strike is part of what unions are calling a “week of awareness and action” about alleged understaffing and underfunding of public services.
