Ten people were killed and five others injured in an attack at a bar in Mexico, authorities said Sunday.

Last Saturday at 23:00 (local time; at 07:00 yesterday Sunday Greek time), a group of armed men invaded and started shooting patrons and workers at the bar, on the road connecting the cities of Celaya and Queretaro, in the state of Guanajuato (central).

Eight people, two women and six men, were killed on the spot, seven others were injured; their identities were not immediately ascertained, according to an official state prosecutor’s report.

The municipal authority of Apaceo el Grande announced a few hours later that two of the injured succumbed to a public hospital in Celaya. It was about a 23-year-old and a 16-year-old.

The remaining five victims are hospitalized in serious condition, according to official sources.

The state government in Guanajuato is working with the prosecutor’s office to “identify” and arrest the perpetrators of the massacre, while it is “in contact with the families” of the victims, according to a press release.

Guanajuato, an industrial state with a booming economy, is among those facing the most acute problems in terms of crime, due to the confrontation between two drug cartels, the Santa Rosa de Lima gangs and the New Generation of Jalisco: they have clashed with extreme violence for dominance in areas of illegal activity such as drug trafficking and fuel theft in the region.
