USA: Biden doubles order for Pfizer pill against Covid

by

The Biden government will double its order for Pfizer’s anti-Covid drug to 20 million from $ 10 million previously, a White House spokesman said today.

“It’s a significant increase in the number of treatments available at our pharmacy,” Kevin Munoz tweeted.

The US government had disbursed $ 5.29 billion for its initial order of 10 million therapeutic regimens. The antiviral medicine can be taken at home when the symptoms appear.

US President Joe Biden is meeting tonight with his team responsible for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic, as the US is now being hit by a new wave.

The American giant Covid-19 pill was approved on December 22 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The antiviral drug can be administered to high-risk patients aged 12 years and older.

Pfizer, marketed under the brand name Paxlovid, is a combination of two pills taken twice daily for five days, once diagnosed and within five days of the onset of symptoms, according to the FDA.

The US pharmaceutical pill allows for an 88% reduction in hospitalizations and deaths in high-risk individuals when taken within the first five days after the onset of symptoms, according to clinical trials.

U.S. authorities have also approved an emergency drug from the Merck Pharmaceutical Company for high-risk adults.
