Argentina: Negative record with more than 81,000 cases of coronavirus in 24 hours

by

Argentina recorded a spectacular increase in cases of the new coronavirus, with 81,000 reported yesterday, twice as much as the previous development, which confirms that the Latin American country is facing a flood of SARS-CoV-2 infections.

The Ministry of Health announced yesterday 81,210 cases, ie 30,000+ more than the previous record set by the pandemic event, which was 50,506 and was recorded last Thursday.

The number of cases increased sixteen in just over two weeks: in mid-December, about 5,000 were reported on a daily basis.

With the spectacular new wave of infections, the infections return to the peak of the pandemic in Argentina at the end of May and the beginning of June, on average 41,000.

However, the increase in infections does not translate – at least not yet – into an increase in the occupancy rate of beds in intensive care units (ICU), which is at 35.9% nationwide.

It also does not currently lead to a large increase in deaths due to complications of COVID-19: 49 were found in the previous 24 hours, compared to 41 announced on Monday. At the peak of the previous wave, at the end of May, more than 500 deaths were recorded per day.

Authorities in Argentina, as well as in other countries, last week reduced the quarantine period for people infected with the virus from ten to seven days to try to mitigate the impact on economic activity.

The health pass for citizens over the age of 13 came into force on January 1, as the summer of the southern hemisphere comes, when citizens will flock to the beaches – and, apparently, to the testing centers.

In Argentina, with a population of 45 million, where the first case of the Omicron variant of the new coronavirus was detected in early December, more than 5.8 million virus infections and 117,294 deaths from the disease have been reported to date. More than 72.6% of the population has received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine, while more than 13% have received a third, booster dose.
