The cuts come on top of already announced layoffs that began in November and extended into January
Amazon is moving forward with new job cuts. The company is expected to cut 9,000 jobs in the coming weeks, Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassi said in a memo to staff on Monday.
“As we just completed the second phase of our business plan last week, I’m writing to share that we plan to cut approximately 9,000 additional positions in the coming weeks – primarily in AWS, PXT, Advertising, and Twitch. It was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the best for the company in the long run. To those ultimately affected by these reductions, I want to thank you for the work you have done on behalf of customers and the company. It’s never easy to say goodbye to our partners and you will be missed” he wrote in the memorandum.
The cuts come on top of already announced layoffs that began in November and extended into January. That round affected more than 18,000 employees and primarily affected staff in the retail, devices, recruiting and human resources groups.
Amazon has made the decision to lay off more employees as it seeks to streamline costs.
According to CNBC, Jassi said the company made the layoffs decision considering the uncertainty surrounding the economy in the near future.
