FRIDAY 24 MARCH 2023

CHRISTMAS THEATER

OLYMPIC PROPERTY OF GALATSIOU

“The winner is the one who follows his dreams…”

This year marks 85 years since the birth of Rudolf Nureyev: an amazing dancer, self-exiled from the USSR, an intense personality. These are just a few elements of the life of one of the leading dancers who shone internationally, on the great stages of classical ballet. His life was turbulent, almost cinematic, with his raw talent quickly leading him to the top and acclaim.

The best show about the life of the great dancer who left early, is finally coming to Athens, as part of the Pan-European tour dedicated to the 85th anniversary of his birth. Immediately after the performance at the Royal Opera in London with the participation of famous soloists of the Royal Ballet, he comes to Athens at the Christmas Theater to enchant us!

The legendary production, with the participation of soloists from famous European ballets, tells about the life of the great dancer Rudolf Nureyev. The performance was enthusiastically received by people who knew Nureyev personally and participated in his life.

Oleg Vinogradov (head of the Mariinsky Theater, the organizer of Nureyev’s 1989 tour) said: “This is an excellent performance and the true story of Rudolf Nureyev’s life.”

Vladimir Ren (a close friend of Nureyev): “Everything in this performance was as it was, it is an excellent work.”

Alla Osipenko (prime ballerina, folk artist of Russia, who danced with Nureyev):

“An amazing transformation from dramatic artist to ballet dancer. I recommend everyone to see it.”

The writer, director and protagonist of the play is Sergei Yankovsky, who plays the role of Nureyev so faithfully and realistically, that when the performance is over, the viewer wishes to see it again as it inspires and strengthens faith and the will to live.

The show is based on true events. The facts of Nureyev’s life that he describes are based on his notes, books and vivid accounts of Rudolf Nureyev’s friends and colleagues.

Spectators will witness the difficult path to glory, which for Nureyev started from a god-forsaken village near the city of Irkutsk, which, however, gave birth to a star who was glorified on the world’s best theater stages.

We will see on stage different aspects of Nureyev’s life: the inexperienced and young boy, the legendary dancer of the Mariinsky Theater and the great artist, whose popularity has been compared to that of the Beatles.

His name was often front page in the press of the time, he became the first Russian dancer, who was the director of the National Theater of France – “Grand Opera”. Rudolf Nureyev left behind a valuable legacy, radically modifying not only the rules of work in the world’s best theater, but also the standards of classical dance on the world stage of ballet.

The play Leap to Freedom is a story about the futility of wealth and glory in the face of death. In the prime of his life, the actor is affected by a serious and incurable disease.

The central theme of this play is the greatness of personality that does not lose its dignity and strength even when it is a breath away from death. It is a story about the last appearance on the stage of an inexhaustible talent.

The news of his death was a thunderbolt for the entire world community. Nureyev’s star shot up into the sky as suddenly as it suddenly went out, leaving behind a glow that is to this day a landmark for all ballet dancers.

The premiere took place in 2007 at the Mariinksy theater in St. Petersburg and soon after it began its tours throughout Europe.

The show was presented with great success not only in Russia, but since 2010 it has also been staged in over 150 cities around the world, including: England, France, Belgium, Holland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Finland, etc. while it has been translated into twelve languages.

The show will be presented at the Christmas Theater with Greek surtitles and the participation of famous soloists from the biggest theaters in Europe.
