The British Ministry of Defense has accused Russian President Putin of deliberately spreading false information about a decision to send tank ammunition containing depleted uranium from London to Ukraine.
Mr Putin condemned the plan to send such munitions to Ukraine, calling them “weapons with a nuclear component” the use of which would require retaliation by Russia.
In its response, the Ministry of Defense in London noted that depleted uranium is a fixed component in munitions that have the ability to penetrate armor-piercing targets and is in no way linked to nuclear weapons.
The Russian warning followed a written parliamentary statement by British Undersecretary for Defense Baroness Annabelle Goldie, who said that the Challenger 2 tanks that Britain is sending to Ukraine are accompanied by the specific depleted uranium munitions.
“Such ammunition is highly effective against modern tanks and armored vehicles,” a Ministry of Defense spokesman said in London. “The British military has been using depleted uranium in armor piercing shells for decades. It is a fixed component and has nothing to do with nukes or abilities. Russia knows this, but is deliberately trying to misinform.
“Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact on personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low,” the spokesman concluded.
